My name is Karen and I am a tapestry weaver. I enjoy the meditative nature of the weaving process. This slow, mindful art resonates with me more than ever before now that I am a mother. A warp on the loom is patient and forgiving; it will quietly wait for you while life unfolds all around. Because of this quality, I find that weaving is a creative practice that is compatible with all the messy, joyful, loving life that comes with caring for three small people.

My weaving practice is about play- playing with color, texture and pattern. By combining a variety of yarn materials (matte cotton and linen, shiny bamboo, metallic lurex, loopy boucle, velvety chenille, the list goes on!) I create decorative patterns and imagined landscapes. Weaving simultaneously lights me up and calms me down. I tend to oscillate between working on delightful itty bitty patch size weavings and larger tapestries. I also find myself going back and forth between creating geometric patterns and exploring more freeform, organic designs. Either choice is related to my current life circumstance. Times of upheaval (a new baby, a move, a pandemic) or transition require the structure that a balanced geometric pattern provides, while times that feel settled afford me the headspace for free form organic designs. The main thing is that I keep on weaving, finding joy and solace in the rhythm of the loom.
